Today in Berlin we all woke up, had breakfast downstairs in the Pfefferbett Hostel, then planned our day. Getting our 7-day tickets was a feat. First we tried one machine and it wouldn't take our cards. Naturally we all wandered down the way to the next machine… and it wouldn't take our cards either. So off to find an atm that would give us change. Finally we all had our tickets and we hopped on the train to go meet our tour guide. Our guide met us near the Brandenburg Gate and we saw Mickey Mouse, a man dressed as a toy soldier, and a teddy bear. The man in the teddy bear suit walked past myself and two others telling us that he likes British English much more than our disgusting American English… Then we all got some sustenance from Starbucks. It was cool to see all the embassies. Our tour guide met us and was giving us some info on the gate when we look over to a bench and see the Mickey Mouse head on the bench, gloves on top, and the guy in the rest of his suit smoking a cigarette… as a group we started laughing and then had to explain to the guide that this is almost sacrilege in our country. So after the Mickey Mouse fiasco he showed us the Memorial for the Jews which was actually artwork depicting black "boxes" of varying sizes and at odd angles on an uneven ground. We took the historic tour that had us walk through the city for him to show us the buildings and give us info about them. We saw some pretty cool stuff. Then we had about 4/5 hours to kill before heading over to our concert so we got food, walked around, then found a Starbucks to hang out in for a while. The concert was amazing! Unfortunately, I was fine before they started playing and the minute it started and the lights dimmed I had to fight to keep my eyes open. After intermission I was able to stay awake more because the song was really unique and a WORLD PREMIER! The Bennewitz String Quartet was so good and I cannot wait to see The Magic Flute tomorrow! As for now… I think I need a nice long rest. Hopefully I'll sleep through the night this time.
